Why we connect. What is inherint in the human condition.

Ahh, what escapes us in our daily business pursuits is understanding the basic human condition. It has taken months of work and sacrifice to fulfill the dream of autonomy and independence. Through it all, to have the support of my husband and family while toiling away at my computer was essential but I’m eager to reach out and reconnect with my friends and colleagues as this process has been somewhat isolating. Yes, our relationship with the computer physically separates us but it also feeds our basic need to connect in ways that are new and energetic.

Note: It is important to have spousal support in any business venture and I have it in spades. My husband provides me with perspective and objective opinions. He essentially is my unofficial business partner, the guy who “has my back” and he’s at the core of my human condition. He has to believe in the risk and be willing to support me as I pour hour upon hour into this venture with the promise of financial security. Without my husband, I would not be here at the cusp of this new business venture.

Now, back to what I was saying. I’ve found this quote to be prophetic and at the core of our work here at GMI.

“A new vision of development is emerging. Development is becoming a people-centered process, whose ultimate goal must be the improvement of the human condition.”

When I strategize about my company’s mission statement, I realize that people are constantly looking to overcome the obstancles of web technology to connect in meaningful ways. The most successful emerging business models are ones that allow people to come and speak (albeit publish) their thoughts, feelings, and personalities. It is important for me to keep this idea as the basis for attacking every business problem.

The other big problem that I always face (being a consumate control freak) is giving up control and letting people to speak freely and express themselves. It is equally important for us to learn to be good listeners. The active role of listening will enable us to not only understand what people are saying but gaining some insight into their basic need to connect in some way.

It gets back to the mission, the focus. In order to be successful, I have to be faithful to the human condition. One that helps people to gain trust in my work. I can always do the next right thing for those that have entrusted me. In reality, moving in this positive direction only energizes me further to continue pursuing my goals.
